Lights Out by Navessa Allen

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lights Out is the first book in the Into the Darkness series by Navessa Allen. It’s a dark romance about Aly, a trauma nurse who spends her time working and scrolling through TikTok. She’s obsessed with videos of masked men and thinks they’re really sexy. One masked man in particular catches her eye, and she watches his videos and leaves comments, not knowing she’s caught his attention. This leads to a wild journey for Aly. The book is told from both Aly and Josh’s points of view, with a dark tone but some funny moments mixed in.

My overall opinion

Now, I’ll be honest, while this book is a fan favorite, (please don’t hate me) the second half didn’t quite work for me. The first half was fun, sexy, and engaging, and I really liked the writing style. But towards the end, the plot felt stretched out, and some of the twists seemed to take away from the dark, stalker romance vibe this was intended to have. It felt like the author tried to add too much all at once, which ultimately took away from the intensity of the main premise. Those last chapters dragged on forever. That said, I might still give the second book a shot because the first part was a fun read. Finally, the plot was flat and I didn’t love or hate Josh, and Aly irritated me at times with her decisions, but overall, the story had its moments.

Who would enjoy this read.

If you like dark romance but not too intense, this might be a good pick. It also has some fun pop culture references. If you’re into possessive, stalker-type characters, you might like this one.  I also think if you want to tip your toes in dark romance this might be a good start. Just make sure to check the trigger warnings, this book deals with topics like dub-con, murder, stalking, and rape.
